About the Fund

In addition to traditional financial aid that enables undergraduate students to attend Dartmouth, we are fortunate to make available supplemental funds supported by our endowment. These resources were previously called Barrier Removal Funds, but are now bundled together and enhanced in the new Dartmouth 4E Fund.

The four Es represent the following:

The Office of Financial Aid is primarily responsible for making sure the full range of the undergraduate experience is affordable and accessible for every student, in collaboration with Student Affairs and other resources on campus.

These funds have historically been used to support students from low-income backgrounds to ease the expenses of essential items (medical co-pays and deductibles, computer repairs), enrichment items (GRE/MCAT/LSAT test prep, graduate applications, professional interview clothing), experiences (extracurricular activities), and emergency costs (emergency travel).

The application for the 4E Fund can be found within DartHub, under Financial Aid for undergraduate students.

Graduate programs have a limited amount of funding available. Guarini and Thayer School students can access the 4E Fund application in DartHub. Geisel students should contact the Geisel Financial Aid Office.

What may be covered by the Dartmouth 4E Fund?

The mission of the Dartmouth 4E Fund is to supplement financial aid for undergraduate students from low-income backgrounds who may face financial burdens or challenges with a range of expenses that can enhance your undergraduate Dartmouth Experience.

Here are some examples of expenses that may be covered by the 4E Fund:

Professional Attire for Internship

Visa expenses for off campus programs

Flights home for emergency purposes

While warm winter gear is considered essential in Hanover, you do not need to apply for funding. First year, high need students (based on income), qualify automatically and will be provided with a gift card to purchase warm winter clothing.

This is not a comprehensive list - funding is not limited to the above items.

We are unable to provide funding for the following, as they are already considered in your financial aid eligibility:

Textbooks
Computers (other than repair)
Housing
Meals
Travel at the Beginning or End of Terms
Health Insurance
